The Wilson Brand

“All they that hate me love death.” Proverbs 8:36

Canon Press has just published a new book by Rebekah Merkle, daughter of Douglas Wilson, titled Eve in Exile and the Restoration of Femininity (Canon Press). The cover has a sketch of an apple on it — but they doctored the image to resemble a skull. I received the image via email this morning and I admit that I did not see it at first — or even on the second and third glances. Everyone I showed it to saw it instantly. I did not — until I went to Amazon, where it jumped. So if you don’t see it below, check this link on amazon.com. The eye sockets and nose hole appear especially hollowed out.

“Hold Your Peace,” Douglas Wilson and the Jenny Geddes BandAnd, yes, I get it. Someone thought they could evoke the Fall by visually merging fruit and death: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:17). I also get that the Kirk needs to represent itself as on the cutting edge of historic orthodoxy (it’s cutting, not orthodox). But since Rebekah has Wilson DNA in her bloodstream, she captured a different motif, at least for me — viz., death. Her father used an image of death to sell his song “Hold Your Peace” (right) as well as the cover for his book Rules for Reformers (below). Now she incorporated a skull, albeit softened around the edges, to communicate her vision of whatever.

The Islamist proverb says, “We love death more than you love life.” Christ Church, Moscow, could adopt this maxim as well, because I can think of no better image than death to portray Doug Wilson’s lasting influence on those he teaches as well as the culture he creates. It’s the Wilson brand.

  1. he’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay
he sleeps all night and he works all day

he drinks Laphroig, he eats his lunch,
    he goes to the lava’try
he puts posts right onto his blog
    and rewrites history
    chorus
he cuts down folks and swings his bat
    and breaks those flower pots
he wears cool biker clothing and
    hangs around in coffee shops
    chorus
    I protect my fellow jerks
    the worst you ever saw
    I like being a patriarch
    just like my dear papa

    he protects his fellow jerks
    the worst you…wait, what?
what’s this? wants to be a patriarch like his papa?
[sobs] I thought you were a pastor!

    1. That is good stuff, NJ. I notice there was no mention of his rigorous exercise regimen. Walk from house to truck. Walk from truck to office. Walk from office to truck. Walk from truck to house. Walk to kitchen. Whew, that’s a tough workout for anyone, no wonder he’s such a marvelous specimen of hard masculinity.

    2. What? It’s comments like this that are so unfair to The Dear Leader! How could you so besmirch his exalted masculinity with your base and calumnious attacks on his character? Pastor Wilson is not even ABOUT to walk into the kitchen! You can bet your egalitarian butt some woman is gonna BRING him something from the kitchen!

      😉

    3. CNW, You are remiss in not noting the repeated raising and lowering of the glass of Laphroaig as part of a strict exercise regimen.

    4. Frankly, given Doug’s pale, pasty, fish-belly, cardiac-patient skin tone, I’m surprised he doesn’t have a heart attack every time he climbs a flight of stairs.

  2. NJ – your lyrics are fabulous. Thank you. Now if we could only get a Youtube version.

    1. Unfortunately I don’t have a youtube channel, Rose, but thank you. I’m vaguely tempted to do other Python tunes but I don’t know how many would work.
