Awaken Idaho conference

Dear Kirkers,

As many of you know, Real Life is hosting a conference this coming weekend called Awaken Idaho. Although we have done a number of things jointly with Real Life in the past, and appreciate much of what they have done, this conference is really problematic. Unless there is a pressing reason why you need to be there, we would like to encourage you to stay away for the sake of maintaining peace in the larger body.

There are several reasons for this. A couple of the speakers have been openly and deceptively hostile to our church and church community, and this last week one of the speakers even went to the length of attacking private members of our church, posting their pictures online, etc. The other reason is that resources for the conference include material from Lundy Bancroft, author of *Why Does He Do That?* — a man who is obviously and openly heretical. An example of his dicey theology can be found here:

http://lundybancroft.com/a-new-spiritual-community/

We are not saying there is nothing of value in the conference or materials, and we are certainly not trying to start a controversy about this. Rather, we are simply urging you to steer clear. Thanks much.

Cordially in Christ,

Douglas Wilson, on behalf of the elders

Here’s a link to Awaken Idaho; notice that Natalie Greenfield will be speaking. Presumably Doug Wilson took offense at the tweet below and the pics that accompanied it. Mr. Wilson didn’t inform kirkers that those “private members of our church” made public statements online in public forums that impugned and maligned Natalie. Just like he does:

  1. Shunning much? Nothing like telling the truth in a way to mislead your flock. I wonder where the line is between not telling everything so that you can mislead people and bearing false witness against your neighbor, or if there really is a line.

  2. What’s *really* going on behind closed doors in the Kirk? Sex trafficking? Child pornography? Extortion? Kidnapping? Murder?

  3. This is the creepiest most evil sentence of his cordial email:

“Unless there is a pressing reason why you need to be there, we would like to encourage you to stay away for the sake of maintaining peace in the larger body.”

What if by attending real healing could happen to women who feel like a Stepford wives because of the cultish teachings they’ve received at the CREC? The Dear Leader has spoken: “STAY AWAY.”

And what the hell does this mean, “for the sake of maintaining peace in the larger body!?” WE WILL BE WATCHING YOU AND WE WILL KNOW IF YOU WENT. AND HELL TO PAY IF YOU DO. Cordially in Christ, The Dear Leader.

P.S. Meanwhile if you will please direct your attention to my personal though linked to the church website blog, you will see what exactly will happen to you if you disobey; you will be berated, you will be publicly mocked and you. will. be. excoriated.

  4. I think maintaining peace in the larger body could refer to one or two things:

    1) If you go and listen to Natalie, it will offend certain people in the Kirk. “Don’ do eet!”
    2) If you go and listen to Natalie, you might hear a story that differs greatly from the one that we tell, you might actually like her as a real person instead of the hussy we make her out to be, and you might believe her, which would definitely be problematic to maintaining peace in the larger body, both now and going forward. Just stay home. It’s better.

  5. I can’t remember the exact quote, but “Pastor” Wilson said something like “We’re not a strong cult. It’s not like I tell people what to do or anything”. But apparently he does reserve the right to, uh, “strongly advise” his sycophants what to do. Especially if it involves hearing something he doesn’t want them to hear. Nope, no cult here….huh-uh…..

  6. The topic of the conference is relational abuse and child sex abuse, and it’s put on by another church, which sounds much more awesome than the Kirk. DW certainly doesn’t want a Kirker to go to a conference and see how relational abuse is defined and that the Kirk encourages women to endure it and attempts to shame them deeply when they escape and how the Kirk has a special fondness for male abusers.
This conference is a minefield in Doug’s eyes, and it has zip to do with Lundy Bancroft’s “heretical” beliefs and everything to do with Lundy Bancroft’s professional insights about abusers.

  7. Here’s a thing, I don’t even live in the US (nor have I even been there), I am not a member of the “Kirk” as stated above and in no way maligned anyone. My comment was one that comes out of seeing men (totally unrelated to Moscow Idaho) I know falsely accused whose lives have been turned upside down. Saying what I said in no way diminishes the evil of sexual abuse it simply points out a different one. My statement was lifted and matched to a photo that I own the copyright to in order to bolster a case. Someone has born false witness against me.

    1. Hi Phil — Thanks for your comment. Can you tell me where the quote comes from? When and where did you make that statement? Also, can you show me the false witness? You just admitted that you made the statement. Where is the falsehood?

    2. The quote comes as a response to an article Doug Wilson wrote about Bathsheba. What I saw was a lot of people attacking Doug but not addressing the real issue the story was addressing. Men can be victims too but we’re being maligned as only they could be abusers. I truly have seen more men falsely accused of abuse and their lives all but destroyed. In Australia it is a big problem where many men are committing suicide each year because of the way the courts presume guilt first. This was not to diminish the situation with women being abused but to bring some balance to the stone throwing that was going on. I have known woman who have known horrific abuse some am no stranger to what is out there.
False witness has been made against me in that my image and an out of context statement has been used as an object of hate. I have seen the twitter comments by people who wouldn’t know the first thing about me or the context of the statement. For those who utter statements about love and forgiveness it is rather incongruous. It’s all very disappointing really.

    3. Phil:
You have not defined or demonstrated false witness. You made the statement and you stand by the statement. I don’t see any false witness; I don’t see any statement taken out of context; and I don’t see any “object of hate.” However, you have made two false accusations in an attempt to manipulate the situation:

      1. You have falsely accused someone (not sure who) of false witness;
      2. You have falsely accused someone (not sure who) of making your image an “object of hate.”

In other words, you are willing to make false accusations against others in the very context of condemning those who make false accusations.

Here are your contributions to the Facebook thread:

Phillip Twiss: That’s so funny I nearly wet myself. I think you just got owned Mr Shere.

Phillip Twiss: Many many men end up in jail or suffer in the courts at the hands of women who make false accusations precisely for the reasons in this piece.

Bearing false witness is never ok (being the 9th commandment and all) and God hates it. Hiding it behind the hurt of one type of crime doesn’t make it any less damaging and wicked.

There are women like Potiphar’s wife in this world and they don’t deserve a free pass — especially at the expense of there victims.

Phillip Twiss: Amen, we have someone dear to us who is a broken man due to a woman like this.

Phillip Twiss: Peter Røise so modern day victims like Joseph should just be told to put up and shut up? Should crimes (and yes what Potiphar’s wife did was a crime) of this type be given a wink and men suffer unjustly because their plight is taboo?

I have seen more men caught in false accusations (and then clearly found to be innocent) in my life than women who have been raped or abused.

Phillip Twiss: Mr Shere there are people you can see for your condition.

      Have I misunderstood you?

  8. I’m not sure what your point is. David Shere was being a disgusting bore who was trolling so deserved to be called out for the fool he was.

The person who posted my photo knows who they are so I’m not going to name them here. I had no axe to grind with them. Clearly those abusing Doug did.

Posting photos of someone in a way that misrepresents them for the sake of gaining kudos or some other reason is bearing false witness. Bit strange for someone who likes to tweet a lot about love and forgiveness. Anyway. Peace. Out.
