Doug Jones: “to the uttermost part of the earth”

But not as a witness (Acts 1:8)

Three men planted the culture at Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho: Pastor Douglas Wilson, Dr. Roy Atwood, and Mr. Douglas M. Jones III. No doubt Doug Wilson had the vision, but he could not have seen it fulfilled without assistance from Roy Atwood or Doug Jones. Together, these three formed the inner circle and they implemented the plan.

Doug Wilson, Roy Atwood, and Doug Jones

Happier days: Doug Wilson, Roy Atwood, Doug Jones.

Dr. Atwood was the lead poseur as well as chief recruiter for New Saint Andrews College, which is a primary source of warm bodies to occupy Kirk seats. Doug Jones did his share of posing but he acted predominantly in a support capacity. Like Dr. Atwood, he served as a Kirk elder and he taught at New St. Andrews College. Mr. Jones also managed Canon Press before Christ Church sold the ministry to N.D. Wilson (son of Douglas Wilson). And Mr. Jones was the Senior Editor of Credenda Agenda, which was the Kirk’s chief means of propaganda during the pre-Mablog era.

But Doug Jones’ principal support role for Doug Wilson was that of a teammate. Mr. Jones acted in a tag-team capacity with Doug Wilson in the local church in the same way that Randy Booth tag-teamed with Mr. Wilson at the denominational level. The two spoke with one voice. Whether engaging in debates on the community bulletin board, making statements to the press, or targeting enemies of the Kirk (anyone who disagrees with Doug Wilson), Doug Jones & Doug Wilson operated from the same page of the same playbook, flawlessly delivering their message.

Last week we considered Dr. Atwood’s abrupt exile to Albania, where he now does the same job he did at New St. Andrews College — albeit in a third-world Muslim country for significantly less income. Today let’s take a quick look at Mr. Doug Jones, who has landed in a remote corner on the other side of earth as well.

In January 2014, Doug Jones posted this announcement to his Facebook page:

Departing
For those interested, who may have not heard, after a long process, I accepted a teaching position at a women’s college in the United Arab Emirates, north of Dubai. Really. It will give us a great opportunity to be free to work on many of the themes of *Dismissing Jesus* and to delight in cross-cultural living. This is the answer to many hopes and prayers. Lord willing, I’ll post photos on FB from there within the week. One down side, I have to be in the air during the Super Bowl. Go Seahawks!

Doug Jones in the UAE

Doug Jones moved from Moscow to work at Sharjah Women’s College in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Middle East. The UAE enjoys a thriving economy because of its oil reserves, but it’s governed by Sharia Law. So on the one hand, society in the UAE glories in the best money can buy. But on the other hand, society in the UAE stumbles in the darkness of an utterly depraved seventh-century culture. And Mr. Jones did not move to the UAE to share the Christian gospel, because “The government imposes restrictions on spreading other religions through any form of media as it is considered a form of proselytizing” (Wikipedia). Further, Mr. Jones’ relocation separated him from his wife and children, who currently reside in the US.

To my knowledge Doug Jones has never said why he chose the UAE or why his experience at NSA (12–15 years) didn’t afford better teaching opportunities in the US. We only know that he had been trying to leave Moscow since 2005. Nine years later he got his wish. There may be a perfectly logical explanation for Mr. Jones’ choice of jobs. Maybe the UAE pays well. Maybe he likes the heat. But as it stands, two of the three men in Doug Wilson’s now-former inner circle live at the uttermost parts of the earth in far-from-desirable circumstances. They stand as a warning to the faculty & administration of New Saint Andrews College, as well as the Kirk elders. One man controls your future job references. You better submit.

Uttermost

    1. Dr. Leithart’s role in the Kirk sewer is significantly greater than we have indicated (or plan to indicate), apology notwithstanding. But he was never in the inner circle. Wilson has had a long-standing feud with James Jordan, going back to the ’80s, and Dr. Leithart has always been a card-carrying member of the James Jordan camp, so he had a safe space to land when he left Moscow. Further, no one knows why he left, but since Wilson has a history of torching bridges and political purges. . . . well. . . . Wilson recently posted an essay on his blog where he put his bead on Dr. Leithart but didn’t pull the trigger:

“I believe that his boarding pass is entirely in order, and I have no complaints in that regard. But I think it would be a mistake to follow him onto that plane.” (“A Rejoinder to Peter Leithart”)

So it appears as though that bridge won’t last long.

  1. “Just to be clear, I don’t disagree with everything here. At Christ Church, we have weekly communion, and I do acknowledge the goodness of ecclesial authority.”

Coming from the once and future Presiding Minister of the CREC, natch.

  2. …for significantly less income

That raises the question: what does Wilson earn get paid and what did these two men make in their previous positions? Without a doubt the Kirk’s finances are cloaked in secrecy, as are so many American churches, but are NSA’s as well?

    1. Couldn’t guess what the Kirk pays Wilson; not sure if they disclose it and if they do disclose it, not sure how anyone could access the books. NSA is shrouded. I recall seeing paperwork years ago where their lawyer (Wilson’s lawyer) instructed them to make NSA a trust(?) to ensure they could keep everything in house. Until recently the Board of Directors was called the Board of Trustees.

Along these lines, I know that Wilson doesn’t tithe. Probably thinks it redundant.

    2. Along these lines, I know that Wilson doesn’t tithe. Probably thinks it redundant. I have wondered that about many of the modern celebrity-pastors and those who teach along the lines of Robert Morris.
