I believe Eric Holder is correct. I believe Dash is correct. I believe our country is at a tipping point that puts us on the precipice of chaos that would make the sixties, which I remember well, seem like a walk in the park.
From President Obama’s speech at the Dallas memorial today:
We also know what Chief Brown has said is true: That so much of the tensions between police departments and minority communities that they serve is because we ask the police to do too much and we ask too little of ourselves. (Applause.) As a society, we choose to underinvest in decent schools. We allow poverty to fester so that entire neighborhoods offer no prospect for gainful employment. (Applause.) We refuse to fund drug treatment and mental health programs. (Applause.) We flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than get his hands on a computer or even a book — (applause) — and then we tell the police “you’re a social worker, you’re the parent, you’re the teacher, you’re the drug counselor.” We tell them to keep those neighborhoods in check at all costs, and do so without causing any political blowback or inconvenience. Don’t make a mistake that might disturb our own peace of mind. And then we feign surprise when, periodically, the tensions boil over.
We know these things to be true. They’ve been true for a long time. We know it. Police, you know it. Protestors, you know it. You know how dangerous some of the communities where these police officers serve are, and you pretend as if there’s no context. These things we know to be true. And if we cannot even talk about these things — if we cannot talk honestly and openly not just in the comfort of our own circles, but with those who look different than us or bring a different perspective, then we will never break this dangerous cycle.
Powerful speech. Just google ‘full text of Obama’s Dallas speech’ or similar to find the full text of the speech.
Can anyone who agrees with the Glocks are easier to get then books PLEASE find that statistic and post it? Are these legal guns or illegal? Lets not just agree without proof. That is why our country IS so divided . We are all willing to believe the loudest voice in the room. Just my thought .
Donna, It’s obvious the guns mentioned would be illegal weapons. Here’s a little exercise. To prove to yourself that this situation exists, seek out the most violence prone, drug riddled, gun infested, gang controlled and impoverished neighborhood in a major US city and live there for a week. Don’t want to go there because it’s too dangerous? Too terrifying? Oh, and there’s not going to be a Barnes and Noble or an Apple Store, is there? Want to buy guns/drugs/another human being on the corner? Not too damn hard.
Now imagine a child living and growing up adversely affected by these environments through absolutely no choice of their own.
Personally, I’m thrilled to hear the loudest voice in the room speak for those with no voice.
As a matter of fact, my son, his wife and 2 children lived in Richmond California in Achison Village the murder capital of California for 5 years. ( They just moved last year to another state.)They are white, he is a professor of chemistry and I stayed with them on and off listening to gun fire and reaching out to the Mexican and black neighbors, Mexican gangs and black gangs. Also sent my 2 teenage daughters there to help as well. No reason to fear, I know where we’re going… There are a few bad apples yes, because of the democrat system more bad apples in poorer areas but people in general there, poor and uneducated and generations living off the government still want a better life and with the right help with the only right answer that is found in Jesus Christ lives are changing. I can only say that Government is not the answer and blogging isn’t either( yes I know I am a hypocrite there) but Living the great commission is the only true and lasting answer. So I suggest we all who call ourselves believers in Christ spend a little less time in front of a screen, a little more time on our knees and in the Word and PLEASE watch The Way of the Master to learn a simple way to learn how to share your faith effectively. Then, when and only then, when we are unified in Love will change come. I guess that’s all I’ll say on this subject because there really isn’t anything else to say. Thanks for reading.
That’s curious. From the outside (I’m Canadian) it looks more like the problem is the Republican system.
The level of cowardice in the American police is amazing. ‘I was in fear for my life’ is the common refrain we hear over and over again.
If you are so fearful, why are you employed as a police officer?

Wayne, If you are a policeman in a gun saturated area with a lot of violence, or even in less challenging areas, it isn’t cowardice to fear for your life, it’s a realistic part of the job that police deal with every day.
