“The apostle Paul teaches us to punch back twice as hard.”

Jesus tells us that when we are struck on one cheek, we are to turn the other. The apostle Paul teaches us to punch back twice as hard. Furthermore, there is no contradiction. If there is apparent contradiction, we are not to try to resolve it through ignoring half of the evidence.

‘And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just’ (Rom. 3:8).

‘Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works’ (2 Tim. 4:14).

‘For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ’ (2 Cor. 11:13).

Given the corruption of the times, it is not surprising that some churches are being attacked. The marvel is why more are not being attacked. Another marvel is why more churches are not responding the way the Scriptures instruct.

  1. Does DW understand how the Scriptures say to respond? I take it that he doesn’t have a very good grasp of the faith he says he is proclaiming.

I have seen it said here, through quotes, that Paul says to “…punch back twice as hard…” but I have yet to see that in New Testament. In fact, when Paul was slapped by a guard while he was standing before the high priest, Paul took a conciliatory tone in his reply.

Peter, on the other hand, replied with a “punch” (i.e., drew his sword and cut off Malchus’ ear). However, Jesus rebuked him for that action.

The NT church isn’t the opening song for the TV show Justified (Long Hard Times to Come – Gangstagrass), which contains the line:

I’m fighting for my soul, God get at your boy
You try to bogart–fall back, I go hard

Of course, since the name show’s name is Justified, I can see how DW might get the two confused. Maybe he considers himself the Raylan Givens of the American church.

    1. @Burwell — At one time Doug Wilson held the correct Christian teaching on this subject. However, after the sex-abuse scandals got out of control, he modified his long-held position to justify his narcissistic rage. See “On Doug vs. Doug”; it documents his radical shift.

  2. Though I’ve never cared for the man, even as a proud “Intolerista” there was a time when I allowed myself to think that this pseudo “Pastor” who has become a blight on an otherwise wonderful community actually was, as self advertised, a formidable wordsmith. Now, upon further reading, he’s not at all supremely gifted. He IS very good at stringing impressive sounding words and sentences together that, on the surface, seem impressive. But upon further evaluation, it truly is mostly gibberish. High falutin’, big word usin’, pompous, “aren’t I wonderful” gibberish that his followers blindly consume without question, but simply gibberish nonetheless.

    1. He is the proverbial (or maybe just the verbal) Marie Antoinette. The people are starving for truth and he says “Let them eat cake…” while gorging himself on his delusions of self-grandeur.

    2. I read his posts and I see where the Laphroaig consumption has definitely taken its toll. Exactly how much alcohol *does* Doug drink on a daily basis, I wonder?
