When you have a situation like this, the court system has a policy of keeping victims’ names out of public knowledge to protect the names and reputations of victims. I would have announced the situation, if it was just Steven and no victims. . . . My interest is in keeping victims and their families protected.

Another case of pants on fire. In those days the church directory included the names of boarders and the address of the house they boarded in. There is no doubt that Doug clamped the lid down tightly on this sad event but even at that it’s pretty difficult to imagine with the trauma associated with Sitler’s abuse that the wife didn’t tell her friends, the husband didn’t share with his. He implies that even the NSA students who also boarded at the house kept their mouths totally shut etc. etc. etc. He wasn’t protecting the victims, he was protecting the reputation of the church. If a newly enlightened church member hadn’t made it public it is doubtful that if the community would ever have connected this crime with a member of Christ Church. After all, in a discussion of the abuse several days after it was discovered, Mr. X told the deputy sheriff that Steven Sitler attended the University of Idaho.
